Sonia's Red Velvet cake....

I made this cake for a very good friend of mine to celebrate her buying her first home.  This is my first ever Red Velvet cake and first ever cake with scroll work.

The frosting and the scroll work are buttercream.  Though I didn't make the traditional icing that goes with Red Velvet (with nuts and coconut), the buttercream layer between the cake layers has finely chopped walnuts and flakes of coconut - yum!  

This cake comes from my Southern Cakes cookbook and I've been wanting to make it for quite some time...  Since it's Sonia's favorite, I figured that this was the perfect occasion!

 

Hopefully, it tastes as good as it looks!  Enjoy your Red Velvet cake Sonia & Daniel....and Congrats on the new house!!

Happy Birthday Finlay - Fire Truck themed cake...

Like most 3 yr old boys, Finlay loves fire trucks.  When his Aunt asked if I could make his birthday cake a few weeks before his 3rd birthday, I happily agreed and wasn't surprised at all to hear the request for a fire truck cake.  Of course, no fire truck cake would be complete without a Dalmatian, fire hose and some ladders...below is what I came up with. 


Finlay's cake arrived at his house safely and in one piece (phew), but he was napping when it arrived.  I'm excited to hear about his reaction, waking up from his nap to see this:

** White Almond Sour Cream Cake, cookie cream filling, buttercream frosting (this combination is what everyone requests....it is DELISH!!)

** Topper (fire truck, dog, road, grass, hydrant, etc) hand crafted from gumpaste and fondant.

** Dalmatian spots, #3, yellow and red dots, brown ladders all are buttercream.
